Higher Committee of KSA Award for Environmental Management in Islamic World to hold its 2nd meeting in Rabat

The Higher Committee of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Award for Environmental Management in the Islamic World will hold its 2nd meeting at the headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat, on 23 October 2017, under the chairmanship of Dr Khaleel bin Mosleh Al Thaqafi, President of the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, President of the Award’s Higher Committee, and Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, ISESCO Director General, Secretary General of the Award.

The meeting will discuss and approve the report of the Award’s jury (edition 2016-2017); the progress report to be submitted to the 7th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers; the proposal to add a fifth category of the “Environmentally-Friendly Islamic City” and the arrangements for the Award’s second edition (2018-2019).

Supervised by the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and under the General Secretariat of ISESCO, the Award covers four categories, namely: best individual or collective research, achievement or practice in the environment and sustainable development, particularly those addressing specific environmental issues of concern to or may potentially benefit the Muslim world; best practice in environment and sustainable development projects or activities in the public sector in the Member States; best practice in environment and sustainable development projects or activities in the private sector in the Member States; best leading practices or activities in the environment and sustainable development in non-governmental organizations that can be replicated in the Member States.

The Award’s value is worth a total of 280,000 US $ and is handed to winners every two years at the opening session of the Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers.

In addition to its President and Secretary General, the Higher Committee comprises the following members: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, ex-Prime Minister of Malaysia, ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador; Mr Pa Ousman Jarju, Director of the Country Programming Division at the South Korea-based Green Climate Fund; Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan; Dr Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al Tuwaijri, ex-Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs in the League of Arab States; and Dr Ibrahim Ozdemir, Founding Rector of Hasan Kalyoncu University in Turkey.

For the record, the 1st Meeting of the Committee, held in Jeddah on 26-27 September 2016, adopted the Award’s organizational structure, media plan, jury panel and logo. It also launched the Award’s portal.
